YiA 2020 Finalists Announced

YiA 2020 Finalists have been announced. Congratulations to our students from Otumoetai College. A fantastic effort given you had to innovate through lockdown this year!

VOTE ONLINE NOW for your favourite finalist in our People's Choice Award (up unil the 27th August).
 
JUNIOR:
  • Hands On – Otumoetai College: Jack McClutchie. A trolley handle cover.
  • Touch Safe Tissues – Otumoetai College: Sania Harmine, Charo Heijnen. To create a product that enables people to press the pedestrian stop light button safely.
  • Colour Changing Heat Soap – Otumoetai College: Harleen Bains, Samantha Doets, Sharon Liu, Danielle Severinsen. Colour changing heat soap to help wash hands properly.
  • Helper – Otumoetai College: Alyssa Gardiner, Karlia Taylor, Robert Unsworth. An app containing all the necessary elements a student needs to baby sit a child virtually.
  • Sink Pods (Soapy Ink Pods) – Otumoetai College: Ocean Mangat, Amelia Shorter. A small amount of liquid soap cased in a water soluble pod casing with colour indicators showing how you have washed your hands.
  • Access-A-Sink – Otumoetai College: Ella Douglas, Mae Grinlinton. Portable Handsfree Handwashing Station.

SENIOR:

  • CheckD – Otumoetai College: Alaya Callinan. To create a device and app to help track moles at home.
  • Street Shop – Otumoetai College: Sarah Latus. A proposed business tool for supermarkets to ensure that everyone is guaranteed a weekly grocery delivery.
  • Fit For All – Otumoetai College: Annabel King. A fitness app which helps people to stay active and healthy at home with a range of workouts/ways to exercise, customised fitness routine, simple recipes, and challenges to do with friends and family.


Tauranga Habour City Lions Book Sale

Ōtūmoetai College is working with the Tauranga Harbour City Lions Club and their annual Book Sale at the Tauranga Racecourse on the 6th to the 8th of November.  

Please drop off your good quality, clean, readable books and jigsaws only for their sale.  

Drop off your books and jigsaws in the foyer to the Performing Arts Centre from 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday. 

We thank the Tauranga Harbour City Lions Club for their ongoing donations to support special projects within the school.

Starsopoly 2020

As a part of the Year 9 STARS programme, all year Year 9 students along with their Peer Mentors, participate in a 'Community Adventure'. 

We call this 'Stars-opoly', this allows students to meet with external organisations and learn about the services available in their community, along with the option subjects available in Year 10. 

This year's event ran over the 11th and 12th August, with Get Smart, The Salvation Army, Te Wananga o Aotearoa, Drive Safe Driving School, NZ Breast Cancer Foundation, Rotary, First Credit Union, Baywide Community Law Service, Graeme Dingle Foundation and Tauranga Martial Arts Academy in attendance. 

With house points on offer, students had a great time participating over the two days.


Shave for a Cure Success!

A fantastic result for our Shave for a Cure event.

The grand total Ōtūmoetai College fundraised for Leukemia and Blood Cancer is $4022! 

Congratulations and well done to all that were involved.


Swimming Sports - 26 August

Swimming sports will be held next Wednesday 26th of August, 8.45-12.30.

If stiudents not yet entered you have until Friday lunchtime to email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. You need to enter between 3 & 5 events. The events are: 1, 2, 4 or 8 Lengths Freestyle, 1 or 2 lengths backstroke, 1 or 2 lengths breaststroke, 1 length butterfly, medley (4x1 - backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle). Remember there are house points up for grabs!
 
 

Māori Language Moment

Be the 1 in a million - Whāia kia kīia ai ko koe tētahi o te miriona.

The Māori Language Commission has redesigned Māori Language Week so that this year, whether we are in lockdown or not: New Zealanders can come together to celebrate te reo Māori.

The Commission wants to get 1 million people speaking, singing and celebrating te reo at the same time in an unprecedented Māori Language Moment for Māori Language Week 2020.

Our Māori Language Moment will take place at 12pm on Monday the 14th September 2020.

Talanoa Ako - 10 Week Course

This free event is a 10 week Pacific parent education programme to equip and empower parents to champion their children's education.
