Future Ready Farms Innovation Challenge
“This Tuesday I took ten year 10 students to Classic Flyers to compete in the Young Enterprise Future Ready Farms Innovation Challenge.
Students were paired with another student from the same school and then matched with a pair from another school to form teams of four (and one team of five) where they had to come up with innovative solutions to current issues faced by Ballance Agri-Nutrients using technology enablers such as AI, genomes, augmented realities, virtual reality etc.
The students worked in their teams to come up with solutions to their problem creating a prototype and presenting their solution to a panel of judges.
The issues that they had to find solutions for were:
- Environmental Footprint – Come up with a solution to reduce NZ farmers and growers environmental footprint (specifically created from greenhouse gases) without impacting efficiency and productivity.
- Clean Water – Come up with a solution to reduce leaching of nitrate from either urine or fertiliser to waterways.
- Efficient Fertiliser – Create a solution for NZ Farmers that helps them to efficiently apply fertiliser/nutrients so they can farm productively while having minimal environmental impact.
In Challenge 1 Mia Picard and Sammy Irwin worked with two students from Bethlehem College. This team won first place for this challenge winning a $30 prezzy card each.
Other students involved were:
Challenge 2: Felix Pearmain and Ash Forster (with Katikati College) and Hayden Pennell and Campbell Roberts (with two students from Mt Maunganui College and one student from Katikati College).
Challenge 3: Jack Brown and Oscar Downard (with Mt Maunganui College) and Shaelyn Matthee and Vaibhavi Jamwal (with Te Puke High School).
It was a fantastic day with our students’ teamwork and presentation skills shining.” – Ms Schumacher
Nathan Wallis – Understanding Your Brain Presentation
This is a new presentation by Nathan Wallis – New Zealand’s renowned Neuroscience Educator!
Understanding Your Brain: Building Resilience and Maximising Learning.
This event will be held on Wednesday 6th December 2023, 7:30pm to 9:00pm in the Performing Arts Centre at Ōtūmoetai College.
The concept of building resilience in our children is more and more at the forefront of parents’ minds. Academic success is in fact a result of resilience and can mean very little without it. In this summary of the evidence and research around what resilience looks like, how it’s fostered and which environments do it the best, Nathan will break down for parents (in his usual ’straight from the hip’ humourous style) exactly what we can do to facilitate our children developing resilience, increase their academic ability and enjoy an overall better quality of life. We will look at how our brains work as a basis for understanding how to achieve this. Relevant to parents/carers for all age groups – from newborns to teens!
