OTC Athletes Triumph at Karapiro!
This talented group of rowers from ŌTC left their mark on the competition. Special recognition goes to Peer Czorny who came 2nd to win a silver medal in the Boys U17 single scull and Arthur Crimmins with a 3rd place and bronze medal for Boys U16 singles scull. Caitlin Wain did a superb job in the Girls U18 A Final singles sculls, but unfortunately missed out on a medal. All the athletes’ dedication, perseverance, and unwavering spirit were on full display throughout the regatta, making us very proud.
These performances at Karapiro are a reflection of the first-class training provided by coaches from both Tauranga Rowing Club and Bay of Plenty Rowing Club and the unwavering support from the wider club community. It serves as a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work and dedication.
While individual achievements are certainly noteworthy, the true testament to the ŌTC’s success lies in the collective effort and camaraderie displayed by their athletes. They rowed not just for themselves, but for each other, creating a supportive and encouraging environment that undoubtedly fueled their competitive drive.
Once again, congratulations to the 19 ŌTC athletes who competed at Karapiro. Their outstanding achievements have brought immense pride to the school and the wider Tauranga community. We eagerly await their future endeavors and wish them the very best in their two week preparation for the Maadi Cup down in Twizel from 18th – 24th March 2024.
MTBNZ XCO NATIONAL EVENT SERIES – NELSON AND PICTON
William: The 3rd round of the MTBNZ National XCO Series we raced was held in Nelson. The race day course was definitely one of the hardest we had ever ridden for a cross country style bike race. The very rocky, steep, and loose trails made every lap a challenge across all of the age categories, creating lots of carnage throughout each race. Cross country mountain bike racing is usually pretty tame, but the addition of Nelson’s most difficult mountain bike trails had us pushing far beyond our limits. The course itself was around 22km with four laps in total. In the end we both were able to place well, Hamish finishing 6th and myself finishing 4th in the UCI u19 category.
Hamish: Between the two races we had an awesome road trip around the Nelson region. We stayed in Nelson for two nights and rode the first race of the trip and the 3rd race of the series. On top of this we also took a shuttle up to the top fringed hill (800m) and descended on an epic trail all the way down to sea level. The highlight of the journey for us was staying in St Arnaud for two nights. St Arnaud sits on Lake Rotoiti (the Nelson version) and it is so beautiful, if you don’t mind sandflies. This is also where we did our favourite ride of the trip up Maitland Ridge trail. We then finally travelled to Blenhiem for the last race of the trip and of the series. Race day in Picton was very hot and the trails were super fun with amazing views of the Marlborough Sounds. We did 4 laps of a 5.5km (20 minutes) course full of very tight, rocky singletrack, along with a few short gravel bursts to break things up. William managed to get 5th place and I got 6th in a pretty stacked U19 field.
After 4 awesome events in the Mountain Bike New Zealand National XCO series, William placed 5th overall and Hamish was 7th.

BOPSS 3×3 Championship
We had two Junior Boys teams, two Senior Boys teams and one Senior Girls team competing at the BOPSS 3×3 Championship. All teams played extremely well against tough competition. Below is a write up from the Senior B coach.
Senior B squad competed in the “B” division. They finished a creditable 3rd out of 8 teams with a relatively inexperienced squad of 3 year 11s and one year 10 junior. Most of their opponents were year 12/13.
A great win by the boys in the 3rd/4th playoff after being down by 8 points but quick three quick 2 pointers ( two by Paxton “Greenlight” Bryson and another by Beau “The point machine” Marsters) had them back in the game , great turnover defence by twin towers Oscar and Cole gave a solid foundation for the shooters to do their thing , another 2 pointer by Beau , followed up by a turnover by Oscar then a dime pass by Beau to Cole who finished well under the hoop. Giving them a one point win.
Top point scorer for the day was year 10 Beau Marsters with 41 points from 6 games. A great team effort however with the big boys doing fantastic defence and Paxton chipping in with important buckets !!
Great fun was had and some tired legs at the end of the day .
