Wandering Kiwi

Wandering Kiwi is a Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme company from Ōtūmoetai College, Tauranga. Our product is New Zealand-themed magnetic bingo for road trips around New Zealand. The aim is to keep children off technology within the car. It is reusable bingo, with Kiwi icons to find while on a car trip. It keeps children off devices in the car and gets them looking at the nature around them, all while normalising the Maori language as we incorporate the Te Reo Maori translations for each icon.

We will be selling at the Papamoa Markets on the 7th of July, and we will be collecting orders via our website between the 7th and 14th of July.

Careers & Pathways Department Term 2

It’s been a super busy Term for the Careers & Pathways Department with students attending some pretty cool trips and off-site opportunities.

GIRLS WITH HI-VIS

The Department took a bunch of lucky students to an exciting and informative day at Papamoa.  Due to atrocious weather the group were unable to visit the various Waka Kotahi Project sites currently being constructed by Connexis and Fulton Hogan but speakers from the companies gave insight about what they love about their job and their career pathways. They also spoke about roles within the industry of construction, Gateway, Apprenticeships and Cadetship opportunities.

New Zealand’s infrastructure industry has a skills gap when it comes to upgrading roading networks, replacing leaky water pipes, maintaining power lines or installing faster broadband technology, to name a few. These jobs are in high-demand, can be a lot of fun, and provide varied career paths… for women just as much as men.

Girls with Hi-Vis® gives female students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, hear from inspirational women in the industry and learn what a career in the infrastructure’s civil, energy, telco and water industries can offer.

FORKLIFT LICENCES

A few groups of students have had the chance this term to achieve their Forklift Licence with our provider, Training Co.

Training Co. was established in August 2022, Training Co Ltd is a diverse new Company based in Tauriko, Bay of Plenty.  Their focus is “Creating Pathways” not only for people to upskill, but also to re-enter the workforce.

Training Co offers quality forklift training with an approved registered trainer who has over 35 years experience as a forklift operator and their aim is to provide skills and education on safer work practices as well as providing high quality training and expertise in all areas of forklift operation.

Feedback from our students has been overwhelmingly positive plus they achieved 7 Unit Standard Credits!

LIVINGSTONE BUILDING NZ LIMITED

Three lucky Gateway students will be working on the new commercial development site in Papamoa with Livingstone Building NZ Limited.  The Pathways Manager and Gateway Coordinator took these students for a pre-site visit prior to starting their Gateway Placement in Term 3.

In preparation for the Placement, these students have also completed a Vertical Horizons Elevated Work Platform Course.

TAKITIMU NORTHERN LINK SCHOOL EXPO

Takitimu Northern Link is the largest roading project in the BOP.  The School Expo provided an opportunity to learn about  opportunities in infrastructure, see big machines up close and meet the team.

ŌTŪMOETAI COLLGE TERTIARY AWARENESS DAY

Tertiary Awareness Day is a fantastic event at Ōtūmoetai College for tertiary providers to showcase what careers they have available and also provide a great opportunity for students to discover more about the options available for tertiary study in a range of subject areas.  From Universities to the Defence Electrical Training Experts, students had the opportunity to chat to providers and gain information and insight into potential careers and pathways.

WĀHINE IN TRADES

This is a fantastic event run by Priority 1 and Vertical Horizonz.  Wāhine in Trades was coordinated to encourage confidence in our wāhine who may be interested in pursuing a pathway which involves heavy machinery.  The machinery included scissor lifts, cranes and diggers. Female industry professionals were present at the event for the girls to chat with along the way.  The hands-on exercises were invaluable and very relevant to those thinking about next steps.

Ōtūmoetai Kindergarten Visit

Last week we had Ōtūmoetai Kindergarten come and visit us (level 3 Early Childhood class).

We had a wonderful time playing with slime, decorating cookies, playing with the babies, puzzles, chalk decorations and more. We have created amazing relationships between our students and the little people of our community.

Level 1 Software Development Trip to Te Puia – Rotorua

The Level 1 Software Development students visited Te Puia in Rotorua. Their tour started at Te Takapū – the National Stone and Bone carving school. Here students learned more about the art of bone and stone carving.

The next stop was Whakairo Rākau – The National Wood Carving School. Students could feel the different types of wood used and were surprised by the difference in weight between the blocks of wood.

Te Rito – The National Weaving school was next on the itinerary. It was named after the baby shoot at the heart of the native flax bush. Here students were challenged to try to break a small piece of flax string for a reward of $10, but no-one was successful.

The students learned that by developing the crafts of weaving and plaiting the ancestors not only created items for everyday use, but they also recorded their history through the weaving. Weaving represents unity and togetherness; a literal and figurative weaving together of people and communities.

A trip to Te Puia would be incomplete without visiting the Kiwi conservation centre and the Pōhutu Geyser. Students got up close and personal to the Kiwis in their nocturnal enclosure, and then set off to get a closer look at the Pōhutu Geyser.

Back at school students can’t wait to get working on a database to help the Āhau Gallery manage their stock and creating a website to promote the Te Puia experience to tourists. – Mrs Strauss

Student Volunteer Committee Thank You

On Wednesday lunchtime, the SVA Committee organized a Pizza Thank-You event for all Ōtūmoetai College student volunteers. Thanks to the generous support from the Sports Department and Stars budget, our team ordered 32 Domino’s pizzas, covering a range of flavors including gluten-free, ham and cheese, cheese, pepperoni, veggie, and beef and onion.

Ōtūmoetai College deeply values and profoundly appreciates all the incredible contributions our volunteers make. These dedicated students engage in various activities, from coaching and refereeing to mentoring, providing cultural support, gardening, babysitting, assisting at the Red Cross and Salvation Army front desks, and participating in rubbish cleanups, painting, and window cleaning.

Volunteers are not paid because they are worthless; volunteers are not paid because they are priceless. (Sherry Anderson)

PS: If any community organisation wishes to sponsor our THANK YOU event next year, please contact the SVA committee at sva@otc.school.nz.

Thank you, volunteers, for your selfless service and for making a difference!
