2024 Ōtūmoetai College Open Evening
Tuesday night was Ōtūmoetai College’s Open Evening, with over 900 visitors coming in two shifts to sample what student life at Ōtūmoetai College is like.
After some welcoming speeches in the hall, including a talk from our current Year 13 leaders and Year 9 students, visitors were teamed up with student guides and passionate staff who took them on a tour of the school, spending time in each learning area.
As well as student guides, our staff and many other students gave up their time to contribute to the displays, act as hosts and demonstrate the type of learning that goes on within the different learning areas of the school.
It was a special occasion with our staff and students doing a wonderful job in hosting our Year 8 visitors and their Whānau. Our visitors commented on the positive atmosphere, fantastic learning environments and variety of curriculum on offer.
Principal Russell Gordon said that the night was a success, and paid tribute to the efforts of our staff and student guides.
Dance NZ Made
Ōtūmoetai College Dancers had a great couple of days attending workshops and competing in our annual schools Dance NZ Made Regional competition.
Our Solo Dances:
Year 12 – Shinate Haynes Ist, Holly Fitzgerald 3rd
Year 10 – Indie-Rose Vianello 2nd
Year 11 – Sammy Irwin 3rd
Year 13 – Klarion Janes 2nd, Duo Klarion & Shinate 2nd
Troupes:
Year 9-10 – Junior Mafia (Hip Hop ) 3rd
Year 11-13 – Being a Women (Yana 3.2) 2nd
Open – Jazz 2nd
Out of the entire 31 entries, our Jazz Placed 3rd overall.
Congratulations to Klarion Janes (Year 13) for this outstanding choreography. It was the highest placed student lead and choreographed Troupe.
There were also a number of students chosen for golden tickets enabling them to compete in Palmerston north to win $1000.00 tuition for 2025. Willow Ellliot-Lowe, Cynthia Forsman, Indie-Rose Vianell & Shinate Haynes.
Warm Up Your Lunch Available
There is now new microwave access at Ōtūmoetai College for students.Students can now access microwaves and hot water between Pav 1 and 2 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during lunchtimes (from the start of lunch until 2pm). This new initiative was made possible by generous donations from the Tauranga Charitable Trust.
Here’s How It Works:
- Bring Your Own Food: Students can bring leftovers, instant noodles or grab something from the fridge or freezer at home
- We heat it up!
Just remember to bring a heatproof cup or container.
Mufti Day for Ōtūmoetai Social Supermarket – 15 August
We have an upcoming Mufti Day on Thursday 15th August to raise money for the Ōtūmoetai Social Supermarket.
Students are to bring a gold coin to wear mufti on this day.
So far, the supermarket has provided 2596 shops to 673 whanau and is seeing some wonderful outcomes.
Over the last 4 months, we have seen a marked increase in the number of shoppers coming to the Social Supermarket as times get tougher for the everyday working family. We are reaching 40 families a week and have heard so many stories from people about how having the Social Supermarket in their neighbourhood is creating hope in tough times… just knowing it is here and able to be accessed when unexpected expenses come allows people to carry on.
