Te Muka Miro Series (Part 3) – Wellbeing at Ōtūmoetai College

This week, we delve deeper into Te Muka Miro, our well-being model, focusing on the second pou, Whakahiko – Engage. Just like the leaves of the Harakeke, our learners (ākonga) thrive when they are engaged with the world around us.

Tama noho, tama mate, tama tū, tama ora – One who remains seated becomes stagnant and full of ailment but the one who stands and is active and present lives well and thrives.

Engaged learners are active participants in their own wellbeing and learning journey. They are curious and ask questions, contributing their ideas and thoughts to class discussions. They connect new information to what they already know, building a strong foundation of knowledge.

By exploring different perspectives and challenging ourselves, being engaged develops resilience and problem-solving skills. When we are engaged we persevere through challenges, maintaining a positive attitude and a strong work ethic.

Engagement fosters a sense of purpose and meaning both in learning and beyond. It fuels positive thought, making experiences enjoyable and rewarding. By being engaged, we unlock our potential and lead more fulfilling lives.

Recommendations on how to be more engaged at school:

  • Take an active role in class: Ask questions, participate in discussions, and complete tasks diligently – Say ‘YES’
  • Contribute to the community – If you have stuff that has been lying around for ages or clothes you don’t wear anymore, pack a box and take it down to the local charity store.
  • Challenge yourself: Step outside your comfort zone and try new things. Join a new team.

Stay tuned for next week’s Te Muka Miro focus!
