BOP Secondary School Sevens Tournament

Recap by Arden Carter – Teacher in Charge of Rugby.

On Wednesday was the Secondary School Sevens tournament. We had 5 teams, (Junior Girls, Senior Girls, Junior Boys, Year 11 Boys and Senior Boys) with close to 60 students… most by any school.

Our Junior Girls group came third with only 8 players. Captained strongly by Jizelle Masoe, our girls lost the first game by a conversion (2pts) against the winning team of TGC. Bouncing back, winning the rest of the pool to finish second in the pool and losing to RGHS in the semi. Both Francella Nafoi-Seumalo and Jizella Masoe have been recognised and asked to join a team to play in the Elevate Sevens tournament this weekend.

Team: Jizelle Masoe (C), Francella Nafoi-Seumalo, Suzie Heke, Sophia Mason, Hynes Ngata, Mahleigh Puhipuhi, Ngahaka Te Moni, Heaven-Lee Palmer-Smith.

Our Junior Boys lost only one game in the pool play, but on score count back they played off for 7 and 8 out of 12 teams. Where they won comfortably and only lost 1 game for the whole day. Made up of mainly Year 10s, this team will be force in the Year 11 grade in 2025.  Acknowledgements for James Black and James Henderson that looked after these boys for the day. Captained by Oliver Catt and two standout players would have been Harry Black and Rugby Debutant Hamish King.

Our Senior Girls had a long day playing at 9am then having to watch and relax until 1:40pm, all though results never went their way, the girls never showed it. They are a wicked group of wahine that deserve all the praise for their efforts. Captained by Essence Soper with standout performers Janneke Bremner and Rugby Debutant CJ Slattery.

Team: Essence Soper (C), Janneke Bremner, Emily Bibi, Lucia Kimi, Tiani Rae, Victoria Geck, Clara Boxberger, Caroline Thiery, Clara Rocha, Khyla Miller, Paige Osborne, CJ Slattery, Luiza Varella Jamnik.

Our Intermediate Boys had tough outings playing games close together. They manage to score tries and get better as the day goes on. Captained by Ryan Adams and standout performances from Keagen Becker and the Captain himself, the future’s looking good with these two at the helm.

Team: Ryan Adams (c), Keagen Becker, Zandru de Bruin, San Lee, Nicholas Wilson, Harry Mills, Tay Strydom, Francois Nel.

Our Senior Boys and end of an era with the majority of this team being Year 13s they finished in style, finishing their rugby journey here at ŌTC with third place in their division. Captained by Joshua Brown who had a stormer of the day scoring 3 100m tries and having a good kicking performance.

Team: Joshua Brown (c), Gabriel Espiritu, Ben Foster, Tayziah Harte-Pauro, Hamish McCauley, Luca Henderson, Connor Grobler, Caleb Griffiths-Knight, Nate Ratana, Harry Mills.

Player of the Day: Harry Mills

Harry Mills played for intermediate boys and backed it up for the senior boys team. Harry reminds me of DJ Forbes, a work horse with the engine that just keeps going. He does his job well and continues to grow, future leader of Rugby here at ŌTC.

Thank you to Nicola King and Adam Braddock for supporting the crew throughout the day. Shout out to Dennis Playford helping out on such small notice. Thank you Jason Shepard for working with our wahine sevens teams.

A huge Shoutout goes to Emma Henderson, all the mahi behind the scenes doesn’t go unnoticed, this day would NOT have happened without all Emma’s hard work, and on behalf of the sevens crew we thank you.

Tenpin Bowling Association

Kaitlyn Hoare did exceptionally well at the Tenpin Bowling Association U21 Teams Competition in the Sunshine Coast over the last couple of weeks.

Kaitlyn placed:

  • Silver in the Women’s singles
  • Bronze in woman’s doubles
  • Gold in  women’s Baker Teams
  • Gold Combined Teams Champs
  • Gold Combined Women’s Champs

And Silver in the Masters Individual competition behind Australian Sam Clifton.

This was a massive achievement considering her age (14) playing in an adult competition. We believe she may have been the youngest competitor there. What makes this more remarkable is she had to play an extra 8 games just to qualify for the Masters which she qualified 11th in. The competition moved into match play series (head to head) and played 7 more games where she topped her group winning 16 points from 21 available. She went into the semi finals which was a best of 3 and after losing the first game she came back to win it 2-1. After all that she went into the final where she lost 2-0 against a far superior competitor.

We are super proud of Kaitlyn with this result and look forward to what the next few years brings for Kaitlyn as she continues to grow and improve in the sport.

Gymnastics Nationals

During the recent school holidays we had three students attend the Gymnastics Nationals in Palmerston North the whole week.

Andrejka represented the Bay of Plenty there and ended up 7th Overall in Level 8 in the country.

She also hit the required qualifying mark there to be invited on the New Zealand Team again and tour in Canada representing NZ next year in April. She is also heading to represent BOP in Tokyo in May.

BOPSS Junior Volleyball Championships
