Robotics Nationals Results
Our Robotics teams returned last weekend from 3 grueling days of travel, probing technical interviews by industry experts, at least 10 hard-fought matches, and sharing a gym without aircon with several hundred people. Their behaviour and sportsmanship were exemplary with members supporting our own, as well as other teams who were their potential opponents.
Ōtūmoetai College teams performed well with 5 of the 7 teams progressing to the top 16 elimination matches. Our top team consisting of Tom Van De Pol, Indie Minshall, and Finn Montgomery-Klein, remained in first position throughout the 10 initial elimination matches and cruised to the semi-final match confident of winning the tournament. However, they were unluckily eliminated due to a competition field controller malfunction, after the head referee decided not to restart the match despite appeals from the teams and a large section of the crowd.
On the bright side, they did get a semi-final participation trophy and the Build Award for the best-designed and built robot.
Our year 9 girls’ team, consisting of Abby Lavin, Amelia Henderson, Glint Asi, Jade Robinson, Bella Chopra, and Phoebe Donnelly received the Judges Award for an innovative robot design, consistent robot and driver performance, and exemplary team contribution throughout the competition. That was impressive for a young team’s first appearance at the top annual event.
