Year 13 Hahei Biodiversity Trip
On the 19th and 20th March, 42 year 13 biology students and 4 teachers headed up to the Coromandel on a Biodiversity field trip.
This included a visit to Pūkorokoro Miranda Shorebird centre to learn about the amazing migrations of the Godwit, Wrybill, Knots and Oystercatchers. We also had the opportunity to see these birds from hides on the mudflats using telescopes. Students got to dig hot pools on hot water beach at Hahei in the afternoon before the rain. Although we had some torrential rain overnight which severely tested the waterproofness of everyone’s tents, the students made the most of the activities over the two days.
The morning dawned clear for the 2nd day where we were able to complete two snorkel dives from the boat in the Te Whanganui-o-Hei / Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve where we got to see the huge diversity in fish and kelp species due to the protection offered by the marine reserve.
The day also included a walk to Cathedral Cove for a swim and the opportunity to take in the beautiful geography and geology of the Coromandel. The students should now have some first hand experience of the benefits of marine protected areas in New Zealand to use when completing their upcoming NCEA Level 3 assessment.
