SPEEDY ŌTC CLIMBERS!
The New Zealand Speed Climbing Nationals were held at Blake Park, Mount Maunganui a couple of weekends ago, with three Ōtūmoetai College students competing in an epic day of competition.
The speed wall features two routes: the 12-metre K Route (Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15), and the 15-metre Olympic Route (Under 17, Under 19, Open and Masters). Both routes include a 5-degree overhang from top to bottom.
Ayla Radley (Year 9) delivered an awesome performance, breaking her own Under 15 New Zealand record from last year with a time of 5.81 seconds. She climbed exceptionally well all day, producing several strong runs. Unfortunately in the final, Ayla slipped and fell, narrowly missing the gold medal and finishing with a well-earned silver.
Poppy Hinde (Year 10) also had a fantastic competition, putting together consistent, tidy runs throughout the day. She achieved a personal best time and finished 4th in the Under 15 Girls division.
Vans Gasapo (Year 11) competed in the Under 17 category on the Olympic Route. After a good performance in the qualification rounds, rain set in and unfortunately the finals were unable to go ahead. Final placings were therefore determined by qualifying times, with Vans finishing 4th overall.

Relay for Life – Te Ara Toiora
Relay For Life is a fundraising event where teams commit to walking, running, skipping, or hopping around a designated track to support their local Cancer Society. Team members take turns passing a baton, ensuring someone is always moving throughout the event. While track lengths and event durations may vary based on location, the dedication to the cause remains constant.
Relay is a powerful way to whakanui (celebrate) people who have or have had cancer and the people who care for them; maumaharatia (remember) loved ones lost to cancer; and tū atu (fight back) by raising awareness and funds for the Cancer Society.
