OUR VALUE: Kia Whakaute – Respect for Self and All

We are highlighting our school values through a fortnightly focus. By concentrating on one value every two weeks, we can collectively elevate the standards of our school community.

Biology Trip to University of Waikato

Level 3 Biology students visited the University of Waikato last week.

Students had a one hour hands on laboratory session extracting DNA from their saliva and learning how PCR is used to amplify DNA. They also learnt how to use a micropipette to add DNA samples into a gel electrophoresis.

They had a talk from a PhD student on the restoration of horse mussel populations in the Tauranga harbour and were given a tour of the campus and halls of residence.

Bike Safety on School Grounds

The following message has been sent to all our students today.  Your support in ensuring students are aware of the importance of bike safety on school grounds would be greatly appreciated.

Kia ora Students,

A reminder that all students riding bicycles to and from school are required to follow the same legal road rules that apply to cyclists on public roads while using the school car park and accessways.

Recently, we have observed some unsafe behaviour, including wheel-stands, excessive speed, and reckless riding within school grounds. These actions place both riders, pedestrians and even motorists at risk.

Please ensure that you dismount your bicycle before entering the bike storage area at the end of C Block and walk your bike safely to the storage racks.

Students who choose to ride recklessly or dangerously may have their privilege of using the school’s bike storage facilities reviewed and, where appropriate, revoked.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping to keep our school a safe environment for everyone.

Mental Health Awareness Week Plan

Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week, and the Hauora Committee has been doing the mahi to organise some cool activities for our students (please see the poster below).

At form time on Monday teachers will go over the week’s plan of fun events and activities to participate in.

Schools’ Pride Week Aotearoa

Next week we will be acknowledging and celebrating Schools’ Pride Week Aotearoa.

Pride Week is an opportunity to promote inclusion, respect, and a sense of belonging for all. It is about creating a school environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and accepted for who they are.

Access to Period Products in Schools

Do you have a Digital SLR Camera you no longer need?

Our Kura offers digital subjects and each year the number of students wanting to study these continues to grow.  We are now looking to set up resources for our Junior classes to use.

We are wondering if anyone in the community may have a Digital SLR camera they are no longer using and might like to donate to our Art Department.  They will be used to teach camera basics and offer a chance for the students to learn photography conventions which they can put into their projects for design and photography.

If you have any questions, please contact: Susan Blakemore, sblakemore@otc.school.nz

Cameras can be dropped off to the Main Office during the day – between 8.00am and 4.00pm.
