Year 11 Observatory Visit

Last week, two groups of year 11 students were lucky enough to head to the Tauranga observatory. We looked at the moon and stars through the telescopes.

We talked about the different phases of the moon; lunar and solar eclipses; the Southern Cross constellation and some planets.

We saw lots of different constellations and one of the favourites was the ‘jewel box’ which consisted of many beautiful stars clustered together.

One of the highlights was seeing the international space station go overhead. Did you know it orbits the Earth 16 times every 24 hours, so the team on board get to see 16 sunrises every ‘day’ (24 hours). It is absolutely flying at a speed of 28,000Km/hr.

Shave for a Cure – 26 September

The Student Hauora Committee is bringing back Shave for a Cure on Thursday, 26th September as part of Mental Health Awareness Week.

Every day, eight Kiwis are diagnosed with blood cancer. This devastating disease disproportionately affects young people, with leukaemia and lymphoma being particularly prevalent.

To show solidarity and raise funds for vital research and support, five brave students have volunteered to shave their heads.

Join us for this inspiring event!

  • Where: The Quad
  • Who: Household name and local barber, Spencer McNeill, will be supervising the shaves.
