Youth Parliament Press Gallery for 2025

Year 13 student Jo Lilley (pictured above & below, far right) has spent some of last school holidays walking the halls of the Beehive as she was accepted to the Youth Parliament Press Gallery for 2025.

She was one of only two students selected for the Press Gallery from the Bay of Plenty and she has made the most of the experience, having already submitted some of her writing to publications such as Stuff.co.nz, with the editor of Stuff offering her some continued guidance as she hones her craft.

Senior Student Involvement in AIMS Games – Important Information

Any senior student wishing to be involved in the AIMS Games (1–5 September inclusive) in an officiating or voluntary capacity must complete a permission form by Friday, 16 August. This form must include parental approval and can be collected from the Deans Room.

As a school, we value the contribution of our senior students to community-minded events and appreciate their willingness to support. However, we remain firmly focused on their academic success.

Key Expectations:

  • Internal Exams (5–12 September) are a critical priority for senior students.
  • Students involved in Winter Tournament Week (26–30 August) are not eligible for a second week of absence to attend AIMS.
  • For other students, participation in AIMS Games will only be approved if they have demonstrated an attendance rate of 85% or higher this term.
  • All approved students must ensure they are fully prepared for mock exams and maintain their academic progress.

We appreciate your support in helping our students balance their responsibilities while contributing positively to our wider school community.

Subject Selection – Year 11 & 12 Career Appointments

Coming up this term is Subject Selection. Mr McCreary has visited Year 11 & Year 12 Form Classes and is the person for your child to contact for a discussion about 2026.

There is a poster on the wall of your child’s Form Class explaining how to make an appointment. Basically, students can send an email to jmccreary@otc.school.nz asking for a time to meet and include two subjects they are able to be out of for around 30 minutes. They will then be sent a time that suits.

Key advice is to continue (or start) subjects they enjoy and are good at.

Instructions on subject selection requirements and how to select them online will be emailed on Monday 11th.

Environment Committee Op Shop

Do your teenage children have clothes they no longer fit/ need or want?

They can take the clothing to their form teacher and put it in the Pink Bag they have. Clean clothing in good condition is accepted. Underwear to be left at home please.

The collection will continue for a couple of weeks.

The Op Shop will be on Thursday, the 14th August.

The money raised will be added to a growing fund – raising money for Project Jonah. This will help buy equipment to use to help stranded whales.
