Open Evening 2025
Last Thursday night, Ōtūmoetai College welcomed over 900 visitors across two sessions, to experience student life at our kura.
The evening began with welcoming speeches in the Performing Arts Centre, including insights and experiences from current Year 13 leaders and Year 9 students. Afterward, student guides and staff led visitors on a tour of the school, stopping at each learning area.
Our staff and many students gave up their time to create displays, act as hosts, and demonstrate the learning that happens in different subjects.
Many visitors commented on the positive atmosphere, fantastic learning environments, and the variety of curriculum available.
Principal Russell Gordon called the night a success and praised the efforts of the staff and student guides.
Year 9 Girls ShadowTech Trip to Mercury
ShadowTech offers girls in Years 9 – 11 the chance to discover the exciting world of technology, ignite their curiosity, and explore a variety of career pathways.
On Tuesday, 12 August, Mrs Strauss accompanied ten Year 9 students on a visit to the Tauranga Mercury office. There, the students met a panel of inspiring women working in digital technology. The panel members shared their career journeys, which spanned roles such as software developer, data analyst, and project lead.
They explained what their jobs involve, discussed the highlights and challenges they face, and offered advice to those considering a similar career path.
The students were treated to a delicious morning tea and lunch, returning to school motivated and inspired to pursue opportunities in digital technology.
At Ōtūmoetai College, students can choose between Software Development and Creative Design in Digital Technologies. These courses are offered from Year 10 to Year 13, with all credits earned contributing towards university-approved qualifications.

Subject Selection – Year 11 & 12 Career Appointments
Coming up this term is Subject Selection. Mr McCreary has visited Year 11 & Year 12 Form Classes and is the person for your child to contact for a discussion about 2026.
There is a poster on the wall of your child’s Form Class explaining how to make an appointment. Basically, students can send an email to jmccreary@otc.school.nz asking for a time to meet and include two subjects they are able to be out of for around 30 minutes. They will then be sent a time that suits.
Key advice is to continue (or start) subjects they enjoy and are good at.
Instructions on subject selection requirements and how to select them online was emailed on Monday 11th.
