An Honour to Meet Sir Robert ‘Bom’ Gillies

What an honour and privilege for some of our Ōtūmoetai students to meet Sir Robert ‘Bom’ Gillies, the last survivor of the 28th Māori Battalion from WW2.

This humble and noble gentleman shared many memories and stories about his time away at war. At just 17 years of age, he embarked on one of the worlds most hostile and painful events ever recorded in history. He was appointed a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to Māori and war commemoration.

At 98 years old, he continues to create a legacy to reunite and remember our most beloved. What a special day for our students to remember.

E te taniwha hikuroa, ka tangi tonu mātou mō ngā hōia i hinga i mua tō aroaro. Nāu ōku whatu i waipuke, nāu taku manawa i whakaoho. Nei mātou o Ōtūmoetai e tūohu nei e te ika a whiro o te motu.
