Barbering Facilities Workshop

The Pathways Department took 5 lucky students to Toi-Ohomai to attend an introductory workshop in Barbering. Students were able to experience hands-on what it would be like to work in a barber shop environment.

Futures Academy are offering a Barbering Course in 2024 (19 L2 credits), 1 day per week, terms 1-3.  Futures Academy courses are attended while students are still at college and are a great way of discovering future pathways prior to leaving school. Students would go to Toi-Ohomai one day per week (transport provided) and school for the other days.  Enrolments are still open for this course.

Barbering is a creative art and professional qualified barbers are in high demand.  It is taught by industry experts in the campus’ professional barber shop.

Students learn all the detailed knowledge and skills to be able to work in the ever-growing barbering industry. The full time course combines a focus on elements of traditional and modern fashion styling with an understanding of the history and influences of this trade.

Biodiversity and Predator Control Workshops

On Thursday and Friday of Week 2, a series of mini-workshops facilitated by Bay Conservation Alliance were held during regular classes for twelve junior Science classes.

These workshops focussed on the importance of maintaining biodiversity in our local area, including a focus on the gully below school.  Students learned about pest control methods to protect our native species and the importance of maintaining small areas of native bush in Tauranga for helping native birds to flourish.

The Environment Committee worked with Bay Conservation Trust during lunch to learn about setting and maintaining traplines.
