Trades Academy
Trades Academy
The Bay of Plenty Futures Academy (originally Trades Academy) was founded in 2009.
Trident High School was appointed the lead provider to help establish one of the first of eleven Trades Academies in the nation by the Ministry of Education.
Since this time, BOPFA has involved over 34 secondary schools/ Kura across the Bay through a comprehensive network of Futures Academy Hubs to support students to experience Tertiary Trades training as part of their high school experience. These hubs include the regions and sub-regions of the Eastern Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Taupo, Tauranga and Tokoroa.
Trades Academy benefits
In partnership with what is now Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology and Te Wananga o Aotearoa, BOPFA provides Level 1,2 and 3 Trades courses that support students to experience success through:
- Tertiary Trades Training while in High School.
- Hands-on learning.
- Improved pathways into trades employment, apprenticeships, and/or further training that supports the Bay of Plenty’s regional growth.
Registrations of interest will be taken during Term 3, with final selections made in January. If a student is part of the Trades Academy, they will still be timetabled into five or six subjects at Ōtūmoetai College.
