NZ Junior Badminton Team Nationals

During the July school holidays 11 Otumoetai College badminton players represented the Bay of Plenty Region at the New Zealand Junior Badminton Team Nationals. The BOP region performed very strongly taking out the Under 13, Under 15, and Under 17 Division 2 competition.

Matthew O’Connor, Jonte Watkins, Azmi Hirota, Bethany Lake, Rachael Dunn, and Megan Lake made up half of the BOP Blue Under 17 team winning Division 2 and the Hawkesworth Shield. The team was unlucky not to make Division 1 after a tight tie against Canterbury on the first day, equal on games at 8 each they lost on count back by 2, putting them into Division 2. The round robin competition culminated in a final against Waikato on the last day, which the team won.

Sartaj Sidhu, Connor Doyle and McKayla Vickers were in the BOP Yellow Under 17 team which placed 4th in Division 2. A great tournament for the team being made up of players from all BOP areas and having to play one more tie than the others over the 4 days as a result of the pool draw.

Hayley Preston was a member of the BOP Blue Under 15 team that won the Hawkesworth Shield for Division 2. They played Hutt Valley in the final of Division 2 on the final day winning the tie 13-3. An awesome result.

Daniel Preston was a member of the BOP Yellow Under 15 team which placed 4th in Under 15 Division 2. He also won the sportsmanship award for his team - well done Daniel.

The players are now working towards other New Zealand Age Group and Secondary School competitions representing Otumoetai College.

ALPE & Get 2 Go Event
