YouthCHAT for Year 9 Students
During Term 1 Year 9 students will be offered the opportunity to complete a YouthCHAT survey. YouthCHAT is a cloud based screening tool developed by the University of Auckland which enables students to explore their health and lifestyle.
Otumoetai College is undertaking a joint project with the Western Bay of Plenty Primary Health Organisation to trial YouthCHAT and provide counselling support.
The survey takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete. YouthCHAT results can only be accessed by the School Nurse Kate Vaaulu and the Counselling team, and all results will be held confidentially. If students are at risk or harm to themselves or others, staff will work with students and parents/ guardians.
If you have any concerns about YouthCHAT please contact Kate Vaaulu, email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Year 12 Hospitality Class
Fish and chip pizza, hangi pizza and mince pie pizza were some of the innovative ideas to emerge in our Level Two Hospitality class recently.
We discovered as a class that some students had not had the opportunity to try kumara or even experience a hangi. This led to a discussion about the flavours that reflected the diverse cultures in our class.
The idea was to present typical flavours of our culture in a pizza. We think we did a great job - nori topped pizza anyone?
Robotics Nationals
Students recently had a great Robotics tournament, they displayed exemplary sportsmanship on and off the field.
The two Year 9 teams had a good learning experience at their first tournament.
The A Team (Year 12 &13), B Team (Year 11) and C Team (Year 10) did very well in the qualifiers to reach the quarter finals.
C Team beat the A Team and went on to the semis with the B team. A series of unfortunate events led to both teams ending their run in the semis, but a busy and enjoyable weekend was had by all.
