WBOP/BOP Junior Tennis Champs

On Friday 11 November, a team of seven Otumoetai College students participated in the WBOP/ BOP Junior Secondary School Tennis Champs held at Papamoa.

Hannah Walpole played very well in winning the Girls Division 1 tournament. Ashirai Zinyowera competed in a tough Boys Division 1 tournament, and did well to finish runner-up in the plate section. Kalis Simmonds, Finnlay Giles, Luke Stevens, Rachel Dunn and Jonty Jenkins all participated in the social divisions of the tournament. Kalis and Finnlay showed great team work in finishing third in the boys doubles, and Jonty showed some promise placing second in the boys singles. All students displayed great sportsmanship and were fine ambassadors of their school.

Special Needs Unit Visit Crossfit 3110

On Friday 10th November some students in the Special Needs Unit visited Crossfit 3110 at 162 Durham Street, Tauranga. The purpose of our trip was to experience a leisure activity as part of a Supported Learning Unit towards NCEA credits called Fun Fitness. The students had an awesome time with our instructors Chivon O’Neill and Jodi Gardiner completing a variety of activities for an hour session. All the activities were adapted to the ability level of the students from using the rings to press ups, or moving like animals across the floor. Here are some comments from the students about the session:
‘I felt energetic doing Crossfit because Chivon made me feel motivated to do activities I do not like. Jumping up and down on the boxes made Crossfit enjoyable and I would definitely do it again.’ Caitlin.
‘Crossfit was interesting and a great workout.’ Sarah
Jodi and his team provided a memorable session for the students. If you are wanting to find out more information or give Crossfit a go, contact Jodi on (027) 6995033 or visit their website:

2018 Netball Coaches Required

We will be needing coaches for a number of teams next year, including our Prem, 1, 2 and Junior 2 teams.  If you have experience in either coaching or playing at a premier level, or know of someone who does, and would be interested in coaching our Prem 1,2 or Junior 2 teams please contact myself - Tracy Rush This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or Chris Matheson This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or Paul Braddock This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. At this level it is preferable that the coaches be neutral and would dearly love to engage someone who would be interested in committing for a number of seasons.  We have been extremely lucky to have Lara Richardson coaching our Prem 1 netball team for a number of years.  Next year she has decided to stand aside to enable her to spend more time with her family.
Please also be aware that the pinnacle of our Prem 1 season is UNISS (Upper North Island Secondary Schools Tournament), which runs for five days at the beginning of September.  Next year this tournament will be held in Tauranga, at Harbourside Netball Centre, but is often in Auckland. It is expected that the coach of the Prem 1 team would travel with the team to this tournament.
There is a clear coaching pathway with Netball New Zealand and if you wish to go down this avenue we will support our coaches in any Netball New Zealand Coach Development they wish to undertake.
It is becoming increasingly harder to get parents of players to coach at college level, so if anyone else is interested in coaching other teams this would also be very much appreciated.
