Marine Studies Sea Exploration

Marine studies students had an enjoyable and informative day out on the water learning about sea life with Dolphin Seafaris NZ.

After seeing huge pods of Dolphins, Gannets, little blue penguins, kina, and lots of other species, students left inspired and enthusiastic for the year to come.

Blessing of Kōpurererua for Rowing

“On Monday 17th of Feb, we welcomed a new double skiff into our school and the Ōtūmoetai College Rowing Club.

A pōwhiri welcomed our new waka onto our school marae and into our whare Okohanga, carried on by our school rowers, and accompanied by coaches, managers, administrators and supports of our school's rowing club.

During the pōwhiri our kaumātua Koro Tūmatawhao Pearson blessed our new waka and in doing so named it after the Kōpurererua River; a significant source of water and life from our school's pepehā.

He explained the significance of this name and its origins of being created by Taurikura who's thrashing tail carved the rivers bends, but also that the water that filled it came from two sources. Similarly, being powered by two rowers, this waka will bring together the mana of two energies into one exciting display of strength, power, and representation of Ōtūmoetai College.

We look forward to hearing stories of the successes of Kōpurererua and its crew!

Mauri ora.” – Bobby Ketu
