Young Innovator Awards

For the upcoming Young Innovator Awards, the organisers were faced with a choice; either stick to the tried and trusted formula that has been refined over the past 10 years, or innovate for the new circumstances they find themselves in. They opted for the second choice, the 2020 version of YiA will be different to previous years.

They had big plans for the 10-year YiA milestone but COVID-19 has, unexpectedly, presented a bigger and more meaningful set of problems to solve through innovation, and YiA loves problems!

Despite the current challenges, our students are upbeat and eager to innovate. Teams are developing key life skills by seeking creative solutions to solve problems via a range of technology platforms to effectively collaborate and communicate their ideas. Students are being supported by their science teachers, peers and whanau. Great effort team!

Junior Online Oceania Chess League

During isolation a few enthusiastic chess administrators shared an idea - an Online Teams Chess Tournament where junior players can represent their city and compete against players from all over Oceania.

This seemed like the perfect time to get it started! And that's how JOOC (pronounced like juice) was born!

The first event takes place this Saturday, 25 April!

When you enter, you form a team with the other players in your city within specific age groups. The age groups are Under 18, Under 16, Under 14, Under 12, Under 10 and Under 8.

The TAURANGA PIRATES would love to have you on their team!
