Europe Physics Trip

12 students from Otumoetai College and Mount Maunganui College went on a Physics trip to France, Switzerland, and Germany.

Some of the highlights included seeing into a nuclear fission reactor which fissioned 93% enriched uranium (which is weapon grade), seeing innovative ways carbon dioxide is being removed from the atmosphere at a carbon capture plant, participating at S'Cool Lab PLUS+ at CERN, seeing the robotics at BMW Welt, and being lucky enough to walk through Notre Dame before the fire.

The students learned a lot, engaged actively with the Science, saw and experienced some amazing sites in Europe. It was an absolutely wonderful experience filled with a lot of excellent memories.

BP Business Challenge - Year 11

On the last three days of term one, eighty Year 11 Business and Accounting students had the opportunity to participate in the BP Business Challenge, facilitated by Young Enterprise.

On the first day, students learnt about identifying problems and how to create practical solutions that could then be turned into potential business ideas. With some new knowledge about starting and running a business, students were let loose on the second day to create businesses which would set out to solve problems that we face in the world today.

On the third day, they developed their pitches and presentations ready to face local business people who acted as judges for the event. Some of the ideas included a flax coffee cup, virtual reality fitness studios, recycled plastic clothing and a lifesaving crash helmet device.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and developed their time management, team work, communication and business skills through hands on practical learning.
